March Rituals | 9 Intentions for Spring

Today marks a new month, the first day of March, and the beginnings of Spring. This magical time of rebirth is a great opportunity for intention setting and refreshing rituals for the month ahead. Let’s take a look at some of the dreamt rituals I will be bringing with me into March, during this month of blooming and brighter evenings. With sunshine on the way, this is a perfect time to move forwards with optimism and joy.

Spend time in nature

This time of year is the perfect time to brush off the cobwebs and get outside as the weather begins to change. It is a joyous time to appreciate the blooms popping up everywhere, as well as blue skies, gloriously sunny mornings and warmer days. Spending time in nature is a perfect way to realign your soul with the seasons and appreciate the turning weather after the cold winter months; let this time remind you of hope. How you get outside, is up to you. Maybe it’s getting out and taking a long walk somewhere new, visiting the beach and refreshing yourself in the cold water, take a wander barefoot on the earth to ground yourself.

Be mindful and intentional

My new philosophy this year is to do things with intention and mindfulness integrated. To do this, I practice both gratitude and intention setting when taking out everyday tasks. This might be as simple as making my morning coffee. I’ll set an intention for the day while I pour my morning brew: today I will show up authentically or today I will be kind to myself and to others. Something as simple as setting an intention for the day will give even the most basic tasks purpose and it helps to reframe your intentions and mindset.

Less screen time

This month I would like to focus on taking more time away from my devices and reducing my screen time. I would like to be more intentional with my time and scheduling my screen time into my day, rather than it being a go-to distraction throughout the day. For many of us, the first thing we do in the morning is look at our phones; checking e-mails, social media, or scrolling mindlessly. To build a healthier morning routine, maybe try reaching for a book when you first wake, or looking at e-mails and social media after breakfast. In an ideal world, I’d like to only have scheduled times where I look at my phone and computer screen, the rest of the time choosing device-free activities such as reading, crocheting or painting.

Express gratitude

Gratitude is a huge intention of mine for this year in general; I’d like to factor it into every day, without fail. This practice is a part of my well-being routine and it’s a great mood-booster. Practicing gratitude is a great way to reframe certain situations and it leaves you feeling lighter afterwards. I’ve recently started a writing project over on my Substack where I find magic within the mundane and write down three things I am grateful for each day. Substack is free to use and you can subscribe to my segment ‘The Magic of Simple Joy’ here. Writing down just three things you are grateful for at the start or end of each day is a great way to attune yourself to an energy of gratitude and abundance.

Cook seasonal foods

This time of year is when cooking seasonally starts to become joyous once again, with new crops coming into season. March and April is a great time to forage wild garlic, as well as dandelions (two of my favourite spring crops to find!). There is something so magical about using locally foraged and seasonal fruits and vegetables; it is a way in which we can live in alignment with nature. We have become a society of convenience, and it is easier than ever to shop any foods any time of the year, but this means we have lost touch with living seasonally and with intention. With spring and summer now on the horizon, use this time to make some plans of delicious seasonal recipes you’d love to try; grab a friend and make a day of it, or create a date night where you create a wild garlic pesto, or dandelion honey (two of my faves!)

Cleanse spaces of stagnant energy

After a long, dark winter, our spaces can become stagnant and filled with unwanted energy. It is why spring cleaning is so effective at refreshing your space and getting ready for a new season. There are many things you can do to cleanse your space, but my favourite is to burn incense or a candle lit with an intention of dispelling stagnant energy, or using a Cleansing Crystal Mist to spritz and refresh your space and fill it with delightful essential oils and crystal-healing energy. Tidying up any rubbish or dirty clothes is a sure-fire way to make a difference to your space, as these things are known to hold stagnant energy within them; just having a quick tidy can have a huge difference. We’ll talk a little more about spring cleaning later!

Play creatively

With the promise of a new season upon us, what better time to try out something new. I invite you to play creatively with your hobbies and give yourself permission to play and be joyful. This might entail trying out something new, or embracing that inner child and letting loose - have a painting afternoon, play silly games with loved ones or get busy with your hands. Try something tactile like baking bread, making something with air-dry clay or try and crochet a simple garment. Perfection is not the objective here, the objective is to play around with textures, feelings and creativity. Follow a tutorial or wing it - the choice is yours, just try out something creative and indulge your inner child; and don’t be afraid to make a mess!

Declutter and clean

There’s a reason that spring cleaning is so popular! It’s a change to once again dispel any stagnant energy in your home and refresh your space. This can be a perfect opportunity to make changes to your home, upcycle some lacklustre furniture or thrift something new and exciting. However you choose to spring clean, decluttering will make both your physical space and headspace lighter and less busy - meaning you have space for more clarity and intention-setting. Maybe take an afternoon to deep-clean some neglected areas in your house or find a new storage solution for some items in your home. Doing this will not only make you feel refreshed, it will breathe new life into the space which has endured the long, cosiness of winter and set the scene for a brand new month and a brand new season.

Reflect

A new month is a great time to reflect on the months or seasons past and how it has made you feel. Use this time to write down what you have enjoyed about the last few months, what you struggled with, and what you are looking forward to going forward. At the start of every month, I like to write down a page in my journal of intentions for the month ahead, including attainable and realistic goals, as well as how I want to feel and try out. I’ll usually write down on my intentions page a few recipes I’d like to try, some new walks or places I’d like to visit, as well as a realistic goal, such as more quality time with my partner or write three new blog posts, as some examples. You can be as ambitious as you like for these intentions, but it helps set the scene for your month ahead and gives you some sort of timeline to follow if you have days when you’re feeling a little lost.

Hoping you all have a magical March and spring season ahead, let me know which of these you will be trying out this month and I’d love to hear about your progress. What are you most looking forward to in March?
